Beefing up Math and Science a Big Goal of NWESD

Math + Science Count!Last spring, the state Legislature authorized substantial funds to the nine Educational Service Districts to beef up mathematics and science curricula at all levels and provide support and training to math and science teachers. NWESD has taken a lead in supporting this program by hiring a Math Coordinator to assist large and small school districts in the region with professional development around best practices in mathematics. In addition, 25 math coaches were allocated by the Legislature to assist math teachers, particularly the 60 percent of districts too small to supply their own leads.

Creating Effective School Systems Goal of District Leadership Academy

Learning about effective leadership and change within school districts has been the goal of a just-concluded District Leadership Academy involving 10 districts in the NWESD region.

“(The academy) was for those who really wanted to look at their leadership through a leadership lens. That was the unique aspect of this seminar series,” explains Sandy Austin, Assistant Superintendent at Nooksack Valley School District (NVSD) and one of three facilitators of the academy

Arlington Names New Superintendent

Kristine McDuffyKristine McDuffy will be the new Superintendent of the Arlington School District starting July 1, replacing Linda Byrnes, who is retiring.

McDuffy, a former Superintendent for the Lakewood School District, has been Director for the Educational Administration Program at Woodring College of Education, Western Washington University in Bellingham, since September 2003.

Noting the difficulty choosing a new district leader from an outstanding list of candidates, Arlington School Board President Kay Duskin points out how much the community and staff participated in the selection process through well-attended forums and other meetings.

“There was a high level of interest and participation,” Duskin states. “We greatly appreciated input we received at the forums, in writing and during site visits.”

Byrnes and her staff plan to work with McDuffy to facilitate a smooth transition, according to the district.

Byrnes, who just received Superintendent of the Year honors from the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA), was Superintendent in Arlington for 12 years. During that time, she established a long distinguished record of service in education and the community and was actively involved in the Northwest Educational Service District 189.
