Prenevost Retires after 37 Years in Monroe

Monroe Public Schools Superintendent Bill Prenevost is retiring after an illustrious 37-year career in the same school district.

“We were fortunate to have Dr. Prenevost with us for so long,” says Tom MacIntyre, Monroe School Board President. “His vision and history have provided our community with a successful and stable public school system.”

Prenevost received his education degree from Montana State University in 1969 and was hired as a science teacher in that same year. He served as Assistant Principal from 1973 to 1977, Principal of Monroe High School and the junior high from 1977 to 1990 and as Assistant Superintendent responsible for Curriculum and Instruction from 1990 to 1993 when he took over the Superintendent’s position.

He was instrumental in the creation of the Sky Valley Education Center, Leaders in Learning and adult-education options with Everett Community College, making it possible to receive an associate’s degree from Monroe.

Three new schools were built during his career as Superintendent, including Monroe High School, Hidden River Middle School and Fryelands Elementary. His leadership also built the community’s first new athletic stadium in more than 60 years.

“Monroe has been a wonderful place to work and I will miss the friends and colleagues I have made during the past 37 years,” Prenevost told the School Board. “Hopefully, I will be leaving Monroe Public Schools a bit better than when I arrived.”

He and his wife, Lucille, were recruited together as part of a program to promote stability in the teaching workforce. She retired from teaching in Monroe and Sultan in June 2005 after more than 26 years.

Monroe School Board has begun the process of selecting a successor for Prenevost.
