Jerry Jenkins
Jerry's Corner: A Status Report
The NWESD 189 has begun planning for the 2006-2007 year. A few items may be of particular interest.
- Teacher-of-the-Year – Is the teacher of the year wandering in one of your schools? It is time to nominate teachers for this special recognition. The NWESD 189 regional winner will then compete with finalists from the eight other ESD regions for State Teacher of the Year honors. For information on how to make a nomination, please call Lana Haugen at (360) 299-4019.
- Technology Leadership Center – The TLC, which provides teacher training and support in the use of technology in classrooms to improve student achievement, will continue to take its lab on the road. This has reduced staff travel time. Please let us know of any special topics of interest if staff would like customized staff development by contacting Becky Firth at
(360) 299-4034.
- Funding/Budgeting – The various programs administered by the NWESD 189 are funded by many different sources: federal and state grants, private foundation grants, fees for services charged to local school districts and other agencies, and a small “core” allocation from the state. This core funding is about 3 percent of our budget and provides potential support of statutorily mandated services such as teacher certification, district financial assistance and various state reporting requirements.
- Classroom/School/District Improvement – Slots in the various NWESD 189 improvement programs are beginning to fill up for the 2006/07 year. This includes:
- Classroom Level – Continuous Improvement Training – Classroom Level (CIT-CL)
- School Level – School Improvement Planning Technical Assistance Project (SIPTAP)
- District Level – Strategic Planning
If your district has an interest in any of these program support services next year, I would encourage you to make contact through your administrator soon.
The NWESD 189 is developing its 2006-2007 budget now so we can focus our fiscal support to district budget renewals later this spring. We will continue to strive to increase our efficiencies to better serve member districts.
Thank you for your continued support. Please do not hesitate to call (360) 299-4003 or email me at jjenkins@esd189.org if I may be of any assistance.
