NWESD 189 Spearheads $7.9 Million Safe Schools Program

Children in Skagit County will benefit from a $7.9 million grant provided by the U.S. Department of Education and administered through NWESD 189 to help seven school districts and several public and nonprofit agencies achieve the goals of a comprehensive health-and-safety program.

The Safe Schools/Healthy Students Grant addresses a wide range of problems that affect students, from bullying and mental-health issues to alcohol, drug and tobacco abuse. Read more

Jerry’s Corner: Midterm NWESD 189 Updates

The overwhelming losses and hardships caused by Hurricane Katrina affirms how small the world is in which we live. We all know someone with family or friends who have been impacted. Several families have relocated to the Northwest region, where their children have been welcomed into caring schools. It is inspiring to see our region and country pull together in times of need.

OSPI Singles out 15 District Schools for WASL Praise

A total of 185 schools statewide were identified by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction for record improvement on last year’s Washington Assessment for Student Learning (WASL) tests in reading, writing and mathematics. Fifteen of the schools were in the NWESD 189 regional district.

Gains were reported by percentage in each of the three WASL grade levels— fourth, seventh and 10th — as well as improvements at some schools in fifth-, eighth- and 10th-grade science. Read more

Participate in the School Accreditation Process

NWESD 189 is accepting applications for school accreditation, as authorized by the Washington State Board of Education (SBE).

The application process requires four stages: planning and self-evaluation, review of the written plan, school visitation and interviews, and finally reporting out and evaluation. Read more

NWESD 189 Welcomes Five Assistants to Staff

Five administrative assistants have recently joined the NWESD 189 staff:

• Ruby Filar is the new assistant in the Information Systems Support Center (ISSC).
• Lynne Rheinhardt has been particularly busy in her first assignment in the Migrant Education Regional Office (MERO).
• Rachel Stewart started with NWESD 189 as a temporary employee late last spring but now is full time with two administrative-assistant jobs.
• Joanne Ward assists NWESD 189 Assistant Superintendent Linda Dobbs in her role as Director of the Teaching and Learning Support Division.
• Jill Locatelli also assists Assistant Superintendent Linda Dobbs in the Teaching and Learning Support Division. Read more

Everett’s Data System at Your Fingertips

For teachers, parents and administrators in the Everett school system, knowing what’s expected of students, how they’re progressing and various assessments are but a click away on a computer.

The Instructional Management System (IMS), a Web-based management and information tool, was created in-house only a few years ago, according to Ric Williams, Director of Curriculum and Assessment for Everett Public Schools, but is making huge strides in data collection and reporting. Read more

Everett Plan Helps Improve Graduation Rates

Everett Public Schools has taken an aggressive lead to curb the alarming high school dropout rate seen rising in recent years around the country. Each of its traditional secondary schools has hired a Success Coordinator, a classified position, to monitor students at risk of not being able to graduate in spring.

In 2004, 42 percent of Everett’s high school students failed to graduate on time, which was actually an improvement over the year before when 47 percent didn’t make it, according to OSPI statistics. Read more

Governor Launches Washington Learns Study

Gov. Christine Gregoire has set in motion an 18-month comprehensive education study to examine the state’s existing education system from early learning through K-12 and beyond.

Called Washington Learns, the analysis “will not be just another study. It will be an unblinking and thorough look at the state of our education system, and it will be followed by an action plan to strength our education system, including legislative proposals I will pursue aggressively,” the Governor states.
